Cumberland Chamber Community Awards & Board Installment Dinner May 4, 2009
After a wonderful dinner provided by the Great Escape on Monday May 4th the Cumberland Chamber presented the Annual Chamber Community Awards and "installed" the new Board of Directors for 2009. We would like to thank the members of the public who nominated the many worthy individuals and businesses this year and extend our congratulations to all of the award recipients.

The George Stockand Citizen of the Year Award - Two individuals were selected to share this award
Rick Grinham & Donna Lemay. The awards were presented by Margaret Stockand.
Rick Grinham's voice can be heard on many a Cumberland night as he announces races and events at the Cumberland BMX Park. Not only does he announce - he has been instrumental in the development and ongoing success of the Park that provides a great healthy activity for kids and puts Cumberland on the destination racing map! He continues a strong advocate for the BMX Park in the face of negotiation between the Village and developers for the possible re-location and re-development of Village Park facilities.
A Cumberland resident since 1995 and a retired military man, Rick served Cumberland as a school trustee for two terms for Cumberland and was a tireless advocate for Cumberland students. He also took a run at the mayors seat this past fall and served as a councilor for the Village of Cumberland from 1996 to 1999. Grinham has been active in the community as a basketball coach for the past 10 years, was one of the founders of the Cumberland Community Schools Society and is a member of a number of community service organizations including the Cumberland Legion Branch # 28 (of which he is the Bingo Coordonator)and the Cumberland-Royston Lions Club.
He is also generous with his time with a variety of non profits helping them with their official elections and review of constitution and bylaws including the Chamber!
We recognize Rick for his ongoing contribution to our community, his role in developing a destination tourism attraction for the Village, his willingness to stand up and govern and for his selfless dedication to providing safe, healthy and fun activities for the kids of the Village!
Donna Lemay
The rich heritage of our Village is one of the key opportunities for future tourism and economic development opportunities and Donna Lemay has been instrumental in ensuring that important projects and heritage information are available, and protected for the community.
She served on the Cumberland Museum and Archives for many years as well as the Village Heritage Commission and has contributed countless hours to our heritage inventory, with a special focus on heritage homes information. She has been a driving force on the Chinatown Committee and is a member of the Coal Creek Historical Society and the Cumberland Legion. Her love of Cumberland is evident in her commitment to so many important community projects.
Donna is also the organizer of the annual Cumberland Garden Tour, in support of the Cumberland Museum, and she takes the lead for many other important Museum Events including the annual Lemon Tea and Fashion Show and the Annual Bean Supper (this year single handedly making baked beans for 125 people). She is an incredible volunteer is committed to making sure the job is done right - from start to finish! She also plays a mean game of darts!
We recognize Donna for her commitment to the rich heritage resources of our community and her obvious respect, hard work and appreciation for the amazing history of the Village of Cumberland.

The John Leung Community Service Award 2009 - Cumberland Village Bakery, Dave Murray

This award is presented to an individual or business providing a leadership in a volunteer service role and has contributed in this capacity over a number of years.
The Cumberland Village Bakery is a fixture in the downtown business community and people come from all over the Island to enjoy Cumberland doughnuts, a tradition maintained by Dave Murray from the previous Achterlonie Bakery. But not only is the Cumberland Bakery the home of destination doughnuts AND home made, all natural baked goods, it is also home to one of the most generous businesses in the Village.
The Bakery has proven that they are committed to running a great business and serving the wellbeing of our community through their voluntary contributions to a wide range of community events and organizations. That's why this year we are awarding them the Chamber Community Service Award!
The Village Bakery contributes to the Cumberland Community Schools Society and Cumberland Elementary lunch programs and special events. They have also provided significant food and services to the Valley two big music events - Vancouver Island MusicFest and The Big Time Out.
They contribute regularily to those in need through the Comox Valley Food Bank, Food Not Bombs and YANA and they support the Citizens on Patrol Halloween Watch with yummy treats to keep the volunteers going. As well they provided cornbread for the Cumberland Museums annual fundraising Bean Dinner in celebration of International Workers Day.
The Village Bakery also supports business and tourism and have regularly contributed to Chamber events including our annual Pancake Breakfast as well as providing treats for Comox Valley Tourism to promote the great local food of the Comox Valley.
They hire local and offer employees flexibility in their work schedules that allows community members to balance the demands of family life and school with their jobs. This support of local families is greatly appreciated by their employees and their faithful customers!

The Cumberland Chamber Business of the Year Award - Cumberland Village Works & the Waverley Hotel, presented by John Jones.

This award is presented to the business that provides exceptional service to the Cumberland area. The recipient of this award is community minded and participates in the social, cultural, environmental, economic and/or civic life of the Village.
This year Cumberland Village Works and the Waverley Hotel have been selected to share this honour.
As a result of the high cailber of performing artists and cultural programming provided by Cumberland Village Works in the Waverley Hotel, the Village of Cumberland has become a premiere cultural destination drawing visitors from the Valley, Vancouver Island and beyond.
Accepting this shared award for Business of the Year for the Waverley Hotel was Mr Harvey Brown and on behalf of Cumberland Village Works - Mr Vig Schulman.

Melissa Camp & John Jones
The Cumberland Chamber Customer Service Award - Melissa Camp, presented by John Jones
This Cumberland Chamber of Commerce Award recognizes an indivdual or business owner who has raised the bar for excellence in customer service in the Village of Cumberland. Melissa Camp, an employee at Seeds Natural Food Market has been chosen as recipient of this year's award from the nominations received.
Melissa is masterful at customer service and gifted at making customers feel at ease. She makes people laugh, remembers their names and details about their lives. She often goes above and beyond the call of duty when meeting the needs of customers by sometimes swapping recipes or offering suggestions. She exemplifies the meaning of excellent customer service in the Village of Cumberland.

The annual Cumberland Market Day is coordinated by the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce as part of the week long Empire Days Celebrations! The Cumberland Chamber is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the businesses and non profits of the Village of Cumberland and to promoting destination tourism, investment and downtown revitalization in the Village. They manage an official Tourism BC Visitor Centre and coordinate editorial in local papers, events calendars, promotional brochures, the CIA (Cumberland Improvement Association) News, and several key Village events including Harvest Fair, WinterFaire, Lunar New Year and Market Day. They also coordinate all candidates meeting to ensure local residents have the opportunity to hear from candidates first hand. Their diverse volunteer board of directors represent recreation, the arts, restaurants, downtown merchants, non profits and local media. How to get here
Cumberland is located in the Comox Valley on eastern Vancouver Island in the foothills of the Beaufort Mountain Range. Highways 19 and 19A link Cumberland with northern and southern Vancouver Island. Cumberland is a two-and-a-half hour drive north from Victoria, or a 75-minutes drive from the ferry terminals of Departure Bay and Duke Point near Nanaimo. We are 40 minutes south of Campbell River and a 10 minute drive to the larger Comox Valley communities of Comox and Courtenay.
BC Ferries operates a route between the Comox Valley and Powell River on the British Columbia mainland. The Comox Valley Airport is served by three major airlines, with 12 daily flights between Vancouver and Comox and direct flights from Calgary. Small aircraft and floatplanes land at the Courtenay Airpark near downtown Courtenay. Daily coach lines connect all parts of Vancouver Island with the Mainland, and local bus service is also available in Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland. Daily train service is available from Victoria to Courtenay.
