Welcome to the Historic Village of Cumberland

Nestled in the foothills of the Beaufort Range beneath the shadow of the Comox Glacier, the historic Village of Cumberland invites you to come experience our rich history and our bright future! A bustling coal mining town from 1888 to 1966, our friendly community of 2800 is home to amazing cultural activities and world class outdoor recreation.

Our annual Lantern Festival, Heritage Fair, Empire Days Celebrations, Miners Memorial Day, a vibrant live music scene, art galleries and exhibitions, heritage tours and the new Showcase Theatre Festival make Cumberland a premier cultural destination.

Mountain biking and hiking trails surround the Village and nearby Comox Lake welcomes swimmers, boaters and campers. Naturalists will love the diverse flora and fauna that fills the marshes and forests around the Village. Gardeners will enjoy the heritage trees and gardens and the annual Garden Tour. We offer hikers, sightseers and skiers a perfect base camp for Mount Washington Alpine Resort and Strathcona Provincial Park.

A BMX track, kid's water park, playing fields, funky cafes and pubs, delicious restaurants, unique accommodations, antique and collectables shops, a recreation centre, a library, a museum, heritage churches and houses, elementary and middle schools and BC longest standing volunteer fire department add to the special character of the Village.

Cumberland is a Village filled with opportunities and adventures for residents, visitors and investors. To find out more you can call the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce at 336-8313/1-866-301-4636 or email cumbcham@shaw.ca.

How to get here

Cumberland is located in the Comox Valley on eastern Vancouver Island in the foothills of the Beaufort Mountain Range. Highways 19 and 19A link Cumberland with northern and southern Vancouver Island. Cumberland is a two-and-a-half hour drive north from Victoria, or a 75-minutes drive from the ferry terminals of Departure Bay and Duke Point near Nanaimo. We are 40 minutes south of Campbell River and a 10 minute drive to the larger Comox Valley communities of Comox and Courtenay.

BC Ferries operates a route between the Comox Valley and Powell River on the British Columbia mainland. The Comox Valley Airport is served by three major airlines, with 12 daily flights between Vancouver and Comox and direct flights from Calgary. Small aircraft and floatplanes land at the Courtenay Airpark near downtown Courtenay. Daily coach lines connect all parts of Vancouver Island with the Mainland, and local bus service is also available in Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland. Daily train service is available from Victoria to Courtenay.
